Approximately 500 people in Enugu State recently regained their sight after receiving free cataract surgeries. This was made possible by GBfoods Nigeria, a leading food brand, in partnership with Fundación Elena Barráquer and Niger Foundation Hospital. This is the fourth year they are doing this programme for people with vision problems.
This year’s programme lasted four days. During this time, beneficiaries received cataract surgeries, treatment, and free protective glasses at the Niger Foundation Hospital.
Speaking at the event, Vincent Egbe, Managing Director of GBfoods Nigeria, said, “At GBfoods, we care about making a positive difference in people’s lives. We do this by offering nutritious food, protecting the environment, and supporting people’s well-being.”
He added, “With the help of Fundación Elena Barráquer and Niger Foundation Hospital, we have helped about 500 people this year regain their sight through cataract surgeries. In total, over 2,000 people have benefited from this project in the last four years.”
“This is not just about corporate social responsibility (CSR); it’s about making a real difference. Everyone deserves the chance to enjoy life, and that includes being able to see,” he said.
Maria Bertrand Muiño, the chief coordinator of Fundación Elena Barráquer, thanked GBfoods Nigeria and the Niger Foundation Hospital for their hard work. She said, “Because of the GBfoods team and the hospital staff, we have been able to help many people regain their sight. We are eager to return next year to continue this important work.”
Dr. Kibe Igho, an optometrist at Niger Foundation Hospital, also praised GBfoods Nigeria and Fundación Elena Barráquer. He said, “It is heartwarming to see the joy on people’s faces after the surgery. Many could not afford this surgery, but now they can see again for free. This effort is truly changing lives.”
