The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed that four people died after drowning in a blocked waterway at Zangon Kaya, in the Dawakin Tofa area of Kano State.
This was shared in a statement on Friday by the Fire Service’s Public Relations Officer, Saminu Abdullahi.
He said the incident happened on Friday afternoon.He explained, “We got an emergency call at around 1:48 p.m. from a man named Rabiu Yusif.
He told us that four people had fallen into a blocked waterway, which had filled up with water because of nearby railway construction. Abdullahi said the fire service quickly sent a rescue team to the location.
He said two of the victims entered the water to swim and got stuck.Then, a third person entered the water to try to save them but also got trapped.
After that, a fourth person went in to help, but he too became stuck.
Abdullahi said that when the rescue team arrived, local residents had already pulled out two of the victims, and the team recovered the other two.
He gave the names and ages of the victims: Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22).“All of them were pulled out unconscious and later confirmed dead,” Abdullahi said.
He added that their bodies were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu from the Dawanau Police Division.
Abdullahi said the cause of the accident was due to people swimming in a blocked drainage channel.
