The Federal Government has said that the Cameroonian authorities have not released any water from the Lagdo Dam, despite rumors in the media.
This information was shared by Richard Pheelangwah, the permanent secretary at the Ministry of Water Resources and Sanitation.
According to the statement, the Minister, Prof. Joseph Terlumun Utsev, spoke directly with the Lagdo Dam Manager, Mr. Ahmad Bivoung, who confirmed that the water level is low at 2.06 meters and no water has been released.
The Ministry is keeping in regular contact with the Cameroonian authorities and promised that any official release of water will be announced right away.
The Minister asked the public to ignore false reports and stay calm, while also following the earlier flood safety and warning measures.
Prof. Utsev advised people, especially in Lokoja (Kogi State), Wurobokki (Adamawa State), and Makurdi (Benue State), to pay attention to early warning signals and check the NIHSA Flood Dashboard for correct and updated information.
The Federal Government is still working on flood control and improving water projects in the Benue region. This includes careful management of existing dams, finalizing plans for the Datsin Hausa Dam in Adamawa State, and working with private partners to build it.
Also, the Kashimbila Dam in Taraba State is being used to control flooding. The Wannune Dam is being upgraded, and plans for the Dura Dam in Benue State are almost complete.
