Nigeria’s daily gas production has risen to 7.59 billion standard cubic feet per day (BSCFD) in July 2025, while gas flaring dropped to 7.16 per cent, according to the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).
The Commission, in its latest Gas Production Status Report, said the July figure represents an 8.58 per cent increase from the 6.99 BSCFD recorded in 2024, and a 9.84 per cent rise from 6.91 BSCFD in 2023.
It noted that the growth in production, alongside reduced flaring, underscores Nigeria’s commitment to ending routine flaring by 2030.
Gas Flaring and Decarbonisation
NUPRC said gas flaring declined steadily from 7.38 per cent in 2023, to 7.55 per cent in 2024, and now 7.16 per cent in July 2025.
The Commission credited the improvement to initiatives such as the Nigerian Gas Flare Commercialisation Programme (NGFCP), Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) projects, and the Upstream Petroleum Decarbonisation Template (UPDT).
Domestic Gas Delivery
Performance under the Domestic Gas Delivery Obligation (DGDO) improved to 72.5 per cent in July, compared to 71.8 per cent in June. Year-to-date figures ranged between 70.8 per cent and 73.7 per cent.
Contract Types and Utilisation
Breakdown of production by contract type shows:
- Marginal Sole Risk (formerly Marginal Fields) – 63%
- Production Sharing Contracts (PSCs) – 24%
- Joint Ventures (JVs) – 10%
- Sole Risk operators – 3%
On utilisation, 35.88 per cent of output went to exports, 27.82 per cent to the domestic market, while 29.13 per cent was used in-field for operations such as fuel, gas lifting, and reinjection.
Gas-to-Power
The report also showed that Gas-to-Power supply hit its strongest level in three months, rising 3.48 per cent to 862.86 million standard cubic feet per day in July, up from 833.86 mmscf/d in June.
So far in 2025, Gas-to-Power averaged 780.23 mmscf/d in January, peaked at 886.83 mmscf/d in March, and stood at 862.86 mmscf/d in July.
