The Federal Government of Nigeria has signed two significant agreements with global healthcare giants Siemens Healthineers and Abbott Laboratories GmbH.
These partnerships, aimed at improving medical diagnostics, training, and local production of essential healthcare solutions, mark a transformative moment for Nigeria’s healthcare sector.
The agreements, signed under the leadership of Dr. Abdu Mukhtar, National Coordinator of the Presidential Initiative for Unlocking the Healthcare Value Chain (PVAC), were witnessed by Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate, Nigeria’s Coordinating Minister for Health and Social Welfare.
The event, which took place in Abuja, is expected to play a crucial role in strengthening Nigeria’s healthcare capacity and achieving the country’s healthcare goals, including the ambitious target of ending HIV infections by 2030.
The agreements focus on several key objectives:
- Local Assembly of Ultrasound Systems: Aiming to reduce reliance on imports and ensure access to high-quality, locally produced diagnostic equipment.
- Medical Training and Capacity Building: Enhancing the skills of Nigerian healthcare professionals to meet growing demand.
- Healthcare Equity and Access: Supporting Nigeria’s goal of ending HIV infections through better diagnostics and treatment solutions.
- Job Creation and Economic Growth: By fostering local production and training, the agreements are also set to boost employment and create a more self-sufficient healthcare system.
Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate praised the signing of these agreements, noting Nigeria’s commitment to healthcare transformation. He lauded the Executive Order providing incentives for healthcare investors, underlining the government’s dedication to improving the nation’s health sector.
“These partnerships with Siemens and Abbott represent a significant step toward achieving healthcare equity and improving health outcomes in Nigeria,” Prof. Pate said.
“We are building a future where Nigeria is not only a leader in healthcare innovation in Africa but also a hub for healthcare manufacturing and skills development.”
Dr. Abdu Mukhtar echoed these sentiments, describing the agreements as a major milestone in Nigeria’s healthcare evolution.
“This MOU symbolizes our collective vision to enhance healthcare delivery, reduce dependency on imports, and unlock the full potential of our healthcare value chain,” he said.
Siemens Healthineers, a global leader in medical technology, is deeply committed to Nigeria’s healthcare development. Dr. Kevin Massoudi, Vice President and Head of Public Sector Engagement for Siemens Healthineers in the Middle East and Africa, emphasized the company’s role in advancing diagnostic solutions across the continent.
“Nigeria’s leadership in health innovation is inspiring, and we are excited to contribute to improved healthcare outcomes through this partnership,” he said.
Abbott Laboratories, a key player in diagnostic solutions, has also expressed strong support for the initiative. Dr. Rabah El Menshawy, Vice President of EMEA & Global Accounts at Abbott, praised the leadership of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and emphasized the role of local production in advancing health equity.
“This commitment will not only provide Nigerians with high-quality diagnostic tools but will also create employment opportunities and foster local expertise,” he stated.
Dr. El Menshawy also highlighted the importance of this partnership in Nigeria’s broader healthcare goals, particularly in the fight against HIV.
“This collaboration is a game-changer, and we are excited to play a part in Nigeria’s journey toward ending HIV infections by 2030.”
The agreements are part of Nigeria’s ongoing efforts to achieve self-sufficiency in healthcare and reduce its dependency on imported medical devices.
By focusing on local production, skill development, and public-private partnerships, the country aims to transform its healthcare landscape, creating a sustainable and robust system for generations to come.
“This is a symbol of hope and progress,” Dr. Mukhtar concluded.
“Together with Siemens and Abbott, Nigeria is setting the stage for a future where it leads in healthcare innovation and becomes a beacon for the continent and beyond.”
The collaboration between Siemens, Abbott, and the Nigerian government marks a significant milestone in the country’s pursuit of universal healthcare access and economic growth through enhanced local capacity.
The agreements are expected to bring lasting benefits, not just in terms of healthcare infrastructure, but also in empowering Nigerian workers and professionals to take charge of the nation’s health future.
