Women of Wuntin Dada and Miri in Bauchi local government area of Bauchi state on Wednesday, took to the streets to advocate for gender-based violence-free society.
The women, carrying placards and chanting songs to buttress their point in a peaceful rally, were drawing support and enlightening their communities on the ills of gender-based violence, which they say is a source of worry to many homes.
The women and girls in their numbers, have received training on GBV mentoring, peer education from Aid Connect for Development, an NGO on how to protect themselves and their families. The training is with support from ActionAid Canada in collaboration with Fahimta women.
Executive Director of Aid Connect for Development, Habiba Agufoh said the five-year project targets males and females from three years and above and so far they have reached over a thousand women in these two communities.
Agufoh said they were adopting these approach because people who are victims of GBV don’t speak out and society blames the victim instead of the culprit.
She envisaged that their capacity building over time will bring about positive change.
Gender-based violence requires collective approach in tackling with all key players playing their role.
