The Nigeria Customs Service, Eastern Marine Command has engaged stakeholders on the Ease of doing business and Temporary Importation Permits.
The meeting, which took place on Wednesday, 25th October 2023, is in line with an effort to streamline and enhance the processes related to vessel operations and trade within Nigeria’s maritime borders.
Speaking at the meeting, held at the command’s headquarters in Port Harcourt, the Customs Area Controller, Comptroller Mike Ugbagu, stated that the Nigerian Customs Service plays a pivotal role in regulating and overseeing the maritime activities in Nigeria’s eastern coastal waters.
He noted that the Command has proactively fostered collaborative dialogues with stakeholders to drive its improvement.
Comptroller Ugbagu emphasized the significance of effective facilitation of temporary importation permits for both foreign and local vessels to avoid unnecessary hitches and delays.
He said, “Today’s meeting serves as a crucial platform for us to engage with our stakeholders and collaborate on solutions to better serve the maritime community.”
“Efficient vessel operations and the management of temporary importation permits are fundamental aspects of our responsibilities in ensuring the compliance of maritime trade within our jurisdiction,” he added.
He further explained that temporary importation permit processes were assessed with a view to simplifying procedures, minimizing delays, and ensuring compliance with customs regulations.
He stated that the Command is committed to engaging with stakeholders and addressing critical issues that signify a proactive approach to strengthen Nigeria’s maritime regulation, secure its maritime borders, and promote a thriving maritime trade environment.
“This meeting marks the beginning of a concerted effort to enhance Customs procedures in the Eastern Marine Command’s area of responsibility,” he said.
Comptroller Ugbagu expressed optimism that the collective efforts of all stakeholders involved will significantly enhance the efficiency of vessel operations and facilitate a more seamless importation permit system, ultimately contributing to the growth and prosperity of Nigeria’s maritime sector.
