Floods caused by heavy downpours have severed a crucial section of the Kano-Maiduguri Highway at Malori-Guskuri, a community in the Katagum Local Government Area of Bauchi State. The flooding has rendered the highway impassable, significantly disrupting transportation between the North-West and North-East regions of Nigeria.
The Kano-Maiduguri highway is one of the major roadways in Northern Nigeria, serving as a vital link for the movement of goods, services, and people between key cities. The road’s closure has forced motorists to seek alternative, often longer and less efficient, routes to reach their destinations, leading to delays and increased transportation costs.
Speaking at the scene on Thursday, Bauchi State Governor, Bala Mohammed, highlighted the strategic importance of the highway for regional connectivity and economic activity. He expressed concern over the adverse impact that the road closure is having on both local communities and the broader economy.
Governor Mohammed called on the Federal Government to urgently intervene in repairing the damaged portion of the highway. He stressed that a swift response is necessary not only to restore normalcy but also to prevent potential accidents and other hardships that could arise from the current situation.

“The urgent intervention by the Federal Government is necessary to prevent carnage and associated hardships on the highway,” Governor Mohammed appealed.
The governor also indicated that his administration is considering measures to maintain and support the upkeep of federal roads within Bauchi State, especially as the rainy season continues to bring heavy rains and the risk of further damage.
Governor Mohammed’s appeal underscores the importance of proactive infrastructure management, particularly in regions prone to flooding and other natural disasters. The situation on the Kano-Maiduguri highway serves as a reminder of the critical need for resilient infrastructure that can withstand extreme weather events, which are becoming increasingly frequent due to climate change.
As the rainy season progresses, the need for coordinated efforts between state and federal authorities becomes even more pressing to ensure that vital road networks remain operational, safeguarding the livelihoods of millions of Nigerians who depend on them.
